I had the same problem, because of my 21:9 monitor. I was more than a little thrilled to find that the mouse and keyboard controls work dead bang on. When you play the game with the modifications enabled, CE runs in a background layer. Whether it's price, waiting for bugs/issues to be patched, DLC to be released, don't meet the system requirements, or just haven't had the time to keep up with the latest releases.
This popular manual is available in two editions, one for users of the MIT software, one for users of Motif.
I found the game to be less fun than its predecessor, though it's obviously far prettier than MP2.
